Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) Duties

Typical responsibilities of a speech-language pathologist include:

  • Diagnosing and treating cognitive and communication impairments
  • Patient therapy sessions
  • Educating family members and caretakers on proper therapy for the patient
  • Collaborating with other therapy and healthcare professionals
  • Communicating with family members and other professionals when necessary
  • Engaging in further research for therapy and treatment plans
  • Keeping records of therapy sessions and plans
  • Tracking the progress of the therapy plan and reassessing if necessary

Becoming a speech-language pathologist typically requires a Master’s degree from an accredited program, passing a national exam, and gaining the necessary clinical experience before being able to practice. Speech-language pathologists should earn a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
