What Are Interventional Radiologists?

Interventional radiologists use minimally invasive image-guided procedures to examine, diagnose and treat diseases, specifically in relation to the organ system. They are responsible for providing an inside look at the human body, revealing the intricacies of bones, organs, tissues and just about everything in between.

Interventional Radiologist Job Duties

Some of the responsibilities of an interventional radiologist include: 

  • Preparing the patient for procedures/treatments 
  • Working with imaging technologies like X-rays, CT and MRI
  • Performing targeted outpatient treatments like stenting, biopsies, angioplasty, thrombolysis and image-guided thermal ablation 
  • Assisting with inserting and removing intravenous lines 
  • Administering medications as needed
  • Monitoring patients and providing post-procedure care 

To become an interventional radiologist, you have to graduate from an accredited medical school and receive fellowship training. After fellowship training, you will need five years of residency, pass your licensing exam, become trained and certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties and obtain your certification from the American Board of Radiology.
