What is a School Psychologist?

As a school psychologist, you support students’ mental health, learning and behavior. You assist them with the ability to achieve their full academic, social, behavioral and emotional potential. In this role, school psychologists work alongside the students’ families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to ensure that all needs are being met in order to strengthen connections between home, school and social life.

School Psychologist Duties

Some responsibilities of a school psychologist include:

  • Supporting student mental health, academic progress and behavior
  • Assisting with academic, social, behavioral and emotional development
  • Providing open communication between parents, guardians and other school staff
  • Providing students with anger management
  • Improving communication styles of students
  • Supporting smooth functioning in a classroom setting

To become a school psychologist, you must at least have a master’s degree. Often prospective school psychologists go on to get their Doctorate of Education or Doctorate of Philosophy after starting their career or finishing their master’s. Certification requirements differ based on location and state.
