What is a Teacher of the Visually Impaired?

Teachers of the visually impaired are educators, with specialized training, who serve students with visual impairments. While specific certification varies state-by-state, vision teachers are required to attain additional certification in order to work with visually impaired students. Teachers of the visually impaired can teach a dedicated class that serves visually impaired students, including a core curriculum in addition learning braille. In other scenarios, teachers of the visually impaired may be in a consulting position for other teachers or serve individualized students’ needs as it relates to their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Regardless of setting, the role of a teacher of the visually impaired is to not only provide an education based on core curriculum but to provide guidance and strategies on independent living.
