 What Is A Medical Technologist?

A medical technologist, also known as a med tech, works in hospitals and labs to perform a variety of tests to help doctors diagnose patients. On a day-to-day basis, a med tech will prepare cultures, collect tissue samples, analyze bodily fluids, review lab reports, and more. Since doctors diagnose patients based on the lab tests a med tech performs, it is crucial to be accurate and precise in this field.

Med Tech Duties

Some of the responsibilities of a medical technologist include:

  • Using test tubes, microscopes, centrifuges, autoclaves, and other medical equipment
  • Performing tests in a medical lab
  • Data entry

To become a medical technologist and perform these duties, at a minimum, you must earn a bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a related field. Although not required if you would like to advance in your career, a master's degree can be  beneficial. After receiving your degree, you will want to get hands-on experience in the field and take courses to familiarize yourself with technologist practices. Once familiarized, you can take an exam to obtain your certification from the American Medical Technologist agency and any other state-leveled required certifications.

Medical Technologist Salary & Job Outlook
