What is a Medical-Surgical Nurse?
As the largest discipline within the nursing profession, med-surgical nurses are known to be patients’ conductors, comforters and caretakers. They wear several hats in their role and carry incredible responsibility for a vast patient base. As a medical-surgical RN, you provide care to hospitalized patients that require a wide variety of duties since no two patients are alike.
Medical-Surgical Nurse Job Duties
Some of the responsibilities of a medical-surgical RN include:
- Preparing and administering medications and other treatments
- Maintaining and updating patient records
- Evaluating patient care plans
- Monitoring vital signs
- Adjusting specialized medical equipment as needed
To work as a med-surg nurse, you are required to have at least an associate’s degree in nursing and two years of nursing experience.
After gaining the experience necessary, you can become eligible to obtain your Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) which can help you advance in your career and increase your pay.
