Step into a rewarding role supporting the educational needs of visually impaired students at the elementary level near Tacoma, WA. As a skilled Braillist specializing in school-based braille support, you'll play a crucial role in empowering young learners by providing accessible materials and direct instruction in braille.
This contract opportunity runs from September 2, 2026, and offers approximately 20 hours per week on student in-person days. Youll be focusing on elementary-aged students, working to create a positive, supportive learning environment and ensuring equal access to education for all.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Demonstrated mastery of Unified English Braille code, evidenced by:
- Successful completion of the WSSB Braille Competency Test, the NBPCB Unified English Braille exam, or holding a Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (WAC 181-82-130)
- Prior experience in a school-based setting is preferred
- Valid Washington State Drivers License or proof of mobility
- Fingerprints and both WSP and FBI background clearances, including sexual misconduct clearance
- Calm, patient demeanor and strong organizational skills
- Passion for working with elementary-aged children and supporting diverse learning needs
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct braille instruction to elementary students with visual impairments
- Transcribe classroom materials and assignments into braille
- Collaborate closely with classroom teachers and special education staff
- Support student independence and confidence through tailored braille literacy strategies
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and material production
