A full-time position is available for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade within a school district located in Portsmouth, VA, with travel to surrounding cities including Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Suffolk. This role begins in August 2025 and continues through May 2026, providing direct educational support to visually impaired students across multiple school settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that accommodate students specific visual impairments.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, therapists, and families to create supportive learning environments.
- Provide specialized instruction in the use of assistive technology and adaptive techniques to enhance student learning.
- Monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
- Conduct assessments related to visual impairment and functional vision.
- Travel regularly to assigned school locations within the region to ensure consistent service delivery.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Current Virginia endorsement in Blindness & Visual Impairments is required.
- Experience working with K-12 students who have visual impairments.
- Strong knowledge of relevant instructional strategies and assistive technologies.
- Ability to effectively manage caseloads and maintain detailed documentation.
- Excellent communication and situational problem-solving skills essential for interviews.
Work Schedule and Location:
- Full-time, 37.5 hours per week.
- Work locations include Portsmouth, VA, with travel expected to Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Suffolk, VA.
