Empower K-12 students with moderate to severe vision impairments by providing specialized instruction and support in an engaging educational environment. This full-time, contract opportunity is located near Norfolk, VA, and spans the entire 2026-2027 academic year. Youll work itinerantly across multiple schools, playing a key role in making learning accessible and meaningful for students who are visually impaired.
Youll collaborate closely with classroom teachers, special education teams, and families, advocating for students needs and sharing your expertise in assistive technology and accessible instructional methods. Conduct vision assessments and help design impactful learning experiences in a supportive school district known for valuing the contributions of dedicated professionals.
Qualifications:
- Valid Virginia Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification
- Experience working with K-12 students, ideally those with moderate to severe vision impairments
- Strong knowledge of current assistive technology for visually impaired learners
- Excellent communication skills for partnering with teachers, staff, and families
- Commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students functional vision and learning needs
- Develop and implement individualized instructional plans
- Provide direct instruction in Braille, orientation and mobility, and the use of assistive devices
- Support classroom teachers in adapting materials and lessons
- Engage families and staff to ensure continuity of services
- Keep accurate, timely documentation in compliance with school and district guidelines
