Step into a rewarding opportunity supporting visually impaired students as a skilled Braillist in an elementary school environment. This contract position focuses on delivering essential braille instruction and ensuring the production of high-quality braille materials, empowering young learners to reach their full academic potential. The role offers a consistent, part-time schedule of approximately 20 hours per week, aligned with student in-person days during the school year.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven experience in braille instruction and braille materials production within a school setting
- Ability to demonstrate mastery of Unified English Braille code by completing any of the following:
- WSSB Braille Competency Test
- NBPCB Unified English Braille exam
- Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (WAC 181-82-130)
- Familiarity with the needs of elementary-aged students who have visual impairments
- Fingerprint clearance, successful WSP and FBI background checks, and sexual misconduct clearance
- Valid Washington State Drivers License or reliable evidence of mobility
- Previous experience in schools or educational settings preferred
Core Responsibilities:
- Provide direct braille instruction to elementary students in an inclusive, supportive environment
- Translate instructional materials, assignments, and assessments into braille
- Collaborate with educational staff to adapt classroom content
- Support individualized education plans with tailored braille resources
- Maintain accurate records for student progress and compliance needs
- Foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere that encourages student engagement and independence
