Job Description

Key Qualifications & Experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise as a Visually Impaired Teacher or Braillist within an educational setting
  • Proficiency with Unified English Braille code, documented by one of the following:
    • Successful completion of the WSSB Braille Competency Test
    • Passing the NBPCB Unified English Braille exam
    • Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (WAC 181-82-130)
  • Valid Washington State drivers license or proof of mobility
  • Completion of fingerprinting and clearances from WSP and FBI, as well as sexual misconduct background check
  • Previous school-based experience is highly desirable

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized braille instruction to elementary students, fostering independence and academic achievement
  • Produce and adapt classroom materials in braille, ensuring full access to curriculum content
  • Collaborate closely with teachers and support staff to develop and deliver effective accommodations
  • Serve as a resource for staff on braille materials, techniques, and best practices
  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold confidentiality requirements

This position runs from September 2, 2026, on student in-person days, approximately 20 hours per week, making it ideal for professionals seeking flexibility while making a meaningful impact. You will be assigned to an elementary school caseload, working directly with students who benefit from your specialized skills.
