Job Description

Qualifications and Desired Experience:

  • Valid certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
  • Experience supporting K-12 students with visual impairments or blindness
  • Strong understanding of Braille, assistive technology, and orientation/mobility concepts
  • Ability to design individualized instruction plans tailored to student needs
  • Collaborative mindset for working alongside general/special education staff, families, and related service providers
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess students functional vision and learning needs, providing direct specialized instruction and consultation
  • Develop and adapt curriculum materials using appropriate formats (Braille, large print, audio, tactile symbols)
  • Teach students skills such as Braille literacy, use of assistive technology, daily living skills, and orientation and mobility concepts
  • Consult and train classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents on best practices and accommodations
  • Monitor student progress through regular data collection and adjust strategies as needed
  • Participate in IEP meetings, contribute to educational planning, and stay current on compliance requirements
  • Support a positive and inclusive school culture that ensures students with visual impairments thrive
