Job Description

Make a meaningful impact by supporting students who are visually impaired in an elementary school environment as a Braillist on a contract basis. In this role, youll provide essential braille instruction and produce braille materials, helping to ensure all students have equal access to learning. Youll work approximately 20 hours per week, aligning your schedule with student in-person days, for the 2026-2027 school year beginning September 2nd.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Prior school-based experience working with visually impaired students preferred
  • Proficiency in Unified English Braille code demonstrated by completion of the WSSB Braille Competency Test, NBPCB Unified English Braille exam, or holding a Library of Congress certificate in literary braille transcribing (per WAC 181-82-130)
  • Valid Washington State drivers license (or other evidence of reliable mobility)
  • Completion and clearance of state (WSP) and federal (FBI) background checks, including sexual misconduct clearance
  • Current fingerprinting clearance
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in both instruction and braille material production
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers and school staff to support student IEP needs

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver direct braille instruction to elementary students in a school-based setting
  • Produce and adapt educational materials into braille for assigned students
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other support staff to facilitate accommodations
  • Maintain accurate records regarding student progress and material distribution
  • Adapt to the evolving needs of the caseload with flexibility and initiative
