Job Description

Step into a rewarding contract opportunity as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, supporting students in an itinerant role near Virginia Beach, VA. This full-time position runs from August 24th through June 4th, offering the chance to make a lasting difference for diverse learners across multiple school sites.

Your expertise will empower students who are deaf or hard of hearing, providing direct instruction across academic, communication, and functional skill areas aligned to each student's IEP. Youll collaborate closely with general education teachers, families, and specialists, adapting curriculum and instruction to ensure that all students meaningfully access learning. Communication modalitiesincluding American Sign Language, spoken language, auditory training, or total communicationare implemented according to each students unique strengths and needs. Regular assessment and data-driven instruction will be central to your approach, ensuring ongoing student growth and success.

Key Qualifications:

  • Valid and active Virginia Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification
  • Demonstrated experience teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing across grade levels
  • Proficiency in various communication methods (ASL, auditory/oral, total communication)
  • Strong collaborative skills for working across teams and with related service providers
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs consistent with best practices

Responsibilities:

  • Adapt and modify curriculum and classroom environments for accessibility, including assistive listening devices and AAC
  • Consult and coach classroom staff to enable successful student inclusion
  • Guide students in developing self-advocacy and social skills
  • Coordinate with audiologists, SLPs, and technology specialists to maintain hearing equipment
  • Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting plans as needed
