Job Description

Take the next step in your special education career with a contract opportunity supporting middle school students in an intensive communications program near Blue Island, IL. This full-time assignment runs from August 14 through November 1, with the possibility of extension depending on coverage needs. Youll work a consistent Monday through Friday schedule, totaling 35 hours per week, providing meaningful support to a group of nine students in a classroom focused on Autism and Intellectual Disabilities.

Your expertise will empower learners as you guide them through a functional and life skills-based curriculum. With two dedicated paraprofessionals alongside you, collaboration is at the heart of this close-knit, resource-rich environment. Expect a variety of hands-on learning moments, including the use of Unique Learning curriculum, functional activities like cooking and laundry in a mini-kitchen, and frequent field trips to reinforce community-based instruction.

Desired qualifications and experience:

  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 endorsement required
  • Previous experience teaching students with Autism or in functional/life skills classrooms strongly preferred
  • Strong classroom and behavior management skills
  • Familiarity with curriculum adaptations, individualized instruction, and collaborative teaching models
  • Ability to foster independence and social skills in a small group setting

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging, individualized instruction in alignment with IEP goals and functional curriculum
  • Integrate Unique Learning curriculum and hands-on activities for maximum student progress
  • Collaborate daily with paraprofessionals and related services providers
  • Maintain clear documentation and communication with families and team members
  • Manage classroom routines, behavior plans, and ensure a safe, supportive atmosphere
