Position Overview
- The K12 Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role ensures compliance with Colorado Department of Education (CDE) standards and federal laws while fostering inclusive, equitable learning environments that support academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development.
Key Responsibilities-
Instruction & Student Support
- Deliver differentiated, evidence-based instruction aligned with Colorado Academic Standards
- Provide specialized instruction in academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and life skills
- Modify and adapt curriculum, materials, and assessments to meet diverse student needs
- Use data-driven practices to monitor progress and adjust instruction
IEP Development & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and Colorado state regulations
- Maintain accurate and timely student records in accordance with district and CDE requirements
- Facilitate and participate in IEP meetings, including progress reporting to families
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with general education teachers to implement inclusion and co-teaching models
- Work with related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, school psychologists)
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and caregivers
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams, MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), and professional learning communities
Behavior & Classroom Management
- Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports (PBIS)
- Support students with emotional and behavioral needs using trauma-informed practices
- Create a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Conduct formal and informal assessments aligned with CDE guidelines
- Analyze student data to inform instruction and intervention strategies
- Prepare required reports and maintain accurate progress documentation
Qualifications-
Required
- Bachelors degree in Special Education or a related field
- Valid Colorado teaching license with Special Education endorsement (or ability to obtain)
- Knowledge of IDEA, IEP processes, and Colorado special education rules
- Strong classroom management and instructional differentiation skills
Preferred
- Masters degree in Special Education or related discipline
Experience working with diverse disabilities (e.g., autism, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders)
- Familiarity with MTSS, inclusive practices, and co-teaching models
- Experience with assistive technology and special education data systems
