Job Description

In this important role, youll facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, teachers, and staff. Your expertise will help ensure access to educational content and social interaction, enriching the learning environment and fostering student success.

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English
  • Experience providing interpreting services, ideally in school settings
  • Knowledge of educational terminology and classroom routines
  • Demonstrated professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to adapt interpretation style to match student age and content
  • Valid certification or credentials in sign language interpreting preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and team collaboration skills

Expected responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken language into ASL (and vice versa) during academic instruction, assemblies, meetings, and school events
  • Support students in classroom participation, group work, and one-on-one interactions
  • Work closely with school staff to understand lesson goals and support individualized education plans (IEPs)
  • Relay information clearly and accurately while maintaining neutrality
  • Prepare with teachers in advance to review materials and terminology as needed
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive school community
