Job Description

A school-based Travel Sign Language Interpreter position is available in Washington, Illinois, offering an opportunity to support the communication needs of students in educational settings. This role involves providing interpreting services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, facilitating effective communication between students, teachers, and staff in various school environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken language into sign language and sign language into spoken language during classroom instruction, meetings, and school events.
  • Facilitate communication to ensure equal access for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within the educational setting.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to promote an inclusive learning environment.
  • Adapt interpreting style to accommodate different educational content and individual student needs.
  • Travel to multiple school locations within the Washington, IL area as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of Deaf culture.
  • Previous experience interpreting in educational settings preferred.
  • Strong understanding of educational terminology and classroom dynamics.
  • Ability to travel to various schools while maintaining punctuality and professionalism.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
