Job Description

Support student success by facilitating seamless communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their peers, teachers, and staff as a skilled Sign Language Interpreter in a supportive school environment near Tacoma, WA. This contract role offers the opportunity to make a daily impact while working closely with dedicated educators and administrators to ensure access to classroom content and school activities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong expressive and receptive skills
  • Experience interpreting in educational settings, particularly K-12, is a plus
  • Familiarity with various sign systems or modes (e.g., SEE, Pidgin Signed English) beneficial
  • Ability to adapt to diverse communication needs and environments
  • Current certification or equivalent credentialing (such as EIPA, RID, or state-level certification)
  • Understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries in a school context

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret spoken and signed communication during classroom lessons, meetings, and school events
  • Collaborate with instructional staff to support educational goals and strategies
  • Provide interpreting services for group activities, individual instruction, and extracurricular programs
  • Maintain clarity, accuracy, and impartiality in all interpreted interactions
  • Support students social participation and engagement with peers
  • Assist staff in understanding Deaf culture and effective communication strategies
