Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Certification or eligibility for certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (i.e., EIPA, RID, or equivalent)
- Previous experience interpreting in educational or similar environments preferred
- Understanding of Deaf culture and knowledge of ethical guidelines for educational interpreters
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere
Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken communication into sign language for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and peers in classroom and school activities
- Modify interpreting style as needed for subject matter and student comprehension
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism within all interpreting assignments
- Support students understanding of lessons, instructions, and school events
- Assist with classroom management and support student engagement during activities
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to Individualized Education Program (IEP) planning when requested
