Step into a rewarding and dynamic school-based environment supporting students as a Sign Language Interpreter for the upcoming 26/27 academic year. Your expertise will empower students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring full access to classroom instruction and interactions. This contract position offers a full-time schedule of 37.5 hours per week and the opportunity to make a real difference throughout the entire school year.
Qualifications and Preferred Experience:
- Valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, plus a passing score on the written assessment
- Other qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH)
- Proven ability to interpret in K-12 educational environments
- Strong understanding of educational terminology and protocols
- Committed to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in all settings
- Collaborative approach to working with educators, staff, and families
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate clear and accurate communication between students who use sign language, educators, peers, and other school personnel
- Support students engagement and participation in classroom activities, extracurricular events, and school functions
- Prepare for lessons by reviewing instructional materials for subject-specific terminology
- Uphold ethical standards and adhere to educational interpreting practices
- Provide feedback and periodic updates to instructional teams regarding students progress and communication needs
