Full-Time Sign Language Interpreter Opportunity
Location: Oxnard, California
Schedule: Full-Time, 6 Hours Per Day
Duration: Immediate Start Through 05/31
Seeking a qualified Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) to provide communication support for students in a school-based setting in Oxnard, California. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with students and educational staff to ensure equal access to classroom instruction, school activities, and educational services.
Position Overview
The Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their teachers, peers, and school staff. The ideal candidate will be a reliable professional with strong interpreting skills, a commitment to student success, and the ability to thrive in an educational environment.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide sign language interpreting services during classroom instruction, school activities, meetings, and related educational settings
- Interpret spoken communication into American Sign Language (ASL) and interpret signed communication into spoken English
- Support student access to academic content while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of all communication
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and administrators to support student needs
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional interpreting standards and ethics
- Assist in fostering effective communication and social interaction between students and peers
- Attend staff meetings, IEP meetings, and training sessions as required
- Adapt interpreting services to meet the communication preferences and needs of individual students
- Maintain accurate service documentation and records in accordance with district requirements
Required Qualifications
- Active California Sign Language Interpreter authorization, certification, or credentials required
- EIPA score meeting state or district requirements, when applicable
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Previous experience working as a Sign Language Interpreter in a school, educational, pediatric, or related setting preferred
- Strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication practices
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting K-12 students
- Knowledge of special education procedures and IEP processes
- Experience interpreting across multiple educational and age levels
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff
