Job Description

A full-time Sign Language Interpreter opportunity is available in Durham, CA, working onsite to support hard of hearing and deaf students in elementary and intermediate school settings. The position spans approximately 30 hours per week, around 6 hours per day, and lasts through May 28, 2026. This role involves facilitating clear communication among students, educators, and staff, enhancing the educational experience for all participants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and effective sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting services within the classroom and related environments.
  • Assist students in academic subjects such as reading, writing, and math, while supporting vocational and life skills development.
  • Monitor and support student participation during classroom, outdoor, and community-based activities.
  • Foster inclusive communication between hard of hearing or deaf students, their hearing peers, and school personnel.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), ESSE-I/R, or NAD/ACCI assessment is required.
  • Candidates with EIPA scores under 4.0 may be considered and classified as ASL Para professionals.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) with an Associates degree is also acceptable.
  • Previous experience in school settings preferred.
  • Availability to work onsite only.
