Job Description

A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available at a school setting in Chesapeake, VA. This contract role offers the opportunity to provide essential communication support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within the educational environment from the start date ASAP through the end of the school year (EOSY). The position requires 37.5 hours per week.

Key requirements for this role include:

  • Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification
  • An Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, including a passing score on the written test
  • Alternatively, other qualifications that are deemed equivalent by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH)

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate clear and accurate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers, teachers, and staff
  • Interpret spoken and signed language in classroom settings, meetings, and school events to ensure equal access to instruction and participation
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards related to interpreting in educational settings
  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to address the needs of students requiring sign language interpretation
