This contract opportunity centers on facilitating understanding and ensuring access to classroom instruction for students who use sign language, working closely with teachers and staff in a school environment near Manhattan, KS.
Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Experience interpreting in an educational or school-based setting is highly valued
- Understanding of interpreter roles and professional boundaries in the classroom
- Able to adapt signing for students at different grade or ability levels
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with both students and faculty
- National or state interpreting credentials preferred (such as EIPA, RID certification, or equivalent)
- Reliability, punctuality, and a positive, student-focused attitude
Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and school activities between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, educators, and staff
- Accurately convey meaning, tone, and intent while maintaining confidentiality
- Prepare for lessons and adapts sign language delivery to support student comprehension
- Clarify communication breakdowns as needed, always maintaining professional boundaries
- Collaborate with teachers and other school professionals to support students success and inclusion
- Support students during various school events or extracurricular activities as requested
