Job Description

A full-time Sign Language Interpreter position is available in the New Orleans, LA area, supporting students within the Jefferson Parish school district. This contract role requires active Louisiana DOE certification and offers an opportunity to work within an educational setting that follows the school calendar. The assignment starts as soon as possible and runs through May 22, 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide skilled sign language interpretation services for K-12 students, facilitating communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their teachers and peers.
  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to ensure effective communication access during classroom instruction and school activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards and district policies.
  • Support a caseload that will be determined based on district needs.
  • Participate in ongoing training and compliance activities, including required drug screening and fingerprinting.

Qualifications and Desired Experience:

  • Active Louisiana Department of Education (DOE) certification as a Sign Language Interpreter.
  • Experience working in K-12 educational settings preferred.
  • Competence in American Sign Language (ASL) and interpreting techniques aligned to educational needs.
  • Ability to pass district-required drug screening and fingerprint clearance.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and professionalism.
  • Flexibility to work full-time, Monday through Friday, 7 hours per day with a 30-minute unpaid lunch.

Work Schedule and Location:

  • Full-time, 35 hours per week following the school calendar.
  • Based in Kenner, LA, serving the New Orleans and surrounding Jefferson Parish area.
  • Assignment to multiple schools as determined.
