Job Description

Bring your expertise in American Sign Language to a meaningful, contract-based role supporting a high school student in a behavioral classroom setting. Located near Katy, TX, this position focuses on providing interpretation services during instructional periods throughout the academic year, from August 12, 2026, to May 27, 2027.

This unique opportunity involves working closely with a 9th-grade student who utilizes cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an assistive listening device. While the student identifies as hearing, speech clarity is limited, making the interpreters support crucial for effective classroom communication. The student is readjusting after returning from a residential day school program, so a compassionate approach combined with technical proficiency is essential.

Desired Qualifications & Experience

  • Hold at least one of the four nationally recognized Sign Language Interpreter certifications
  • Previous experience interpreting in an educational or special education environment highly preferred
  • Solid understanding of American Sign Language and deaf culture
  • Ability to manage boundaries and adapt communication style in a behavioral classroom setting
  • Professional demeanor, discretion, and a student-focused approach

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent, high-quality sign language interpretation for instructional timesapproximately 6.5 hours per day
  • Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and related service providers to facilitate full participation in academic activities
  • Support transitions and access to curriculum without interpreting during lunch or arrival/dismissal
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold both school policy and ethical standards for interpreters
