As a contract Sign Language Interpreter, youll work closely with educators to foster an accessible and inclusive environment, ensuring all students have equal access to communication and learning opportunities.
Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), with strong expressive and receptive skills
- Previous experience as a sign language interpreter in an educational setting preferred
- Understanding of interpreter ethics, confidentiality requirements, and professional standards
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, staff, and families
- Flexibility to adapt interpreting style and methods to meet diverse needs across classrooms and activities
- High school diploma or equivalent required; interpreter certification (such as EIPA, RID, or relevant state credentials) highly desirable
Core Responsibilities:
- Deliver accurate, timely sign language interpretation during classroom lessons, meetings, student interactions, extracurricular activities, and school events
- Foster clear communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and all members of the school community
- Collaborate with teachers and support staff to understand lesson objectives and adapt interpreting methods to fit instructional goals
- Maintain professional boundaries, adhere to ethical guidelines, and uphold confidentiality
- Support student engagement and participation in all areas of the school day
