Job Description

Step into a rewarding role supporting students as a Sign Language Interpreter for the 20262027 academic year. This full-time contract position offers you the chance to work closely with educators and students, fostering inclusive communication and enhancing educational outcomes. Youll provide critical interpretive services across various school environments while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic setting.

Key Qualifications:

  • Hold a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III,
  • Achieve an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher and a passing written exam,
  • Or possess qualifications that the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) deems equivalent,
  • Demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL),
  • Maintain professionalism and strong interpersonal skills in collaborative educational settings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Interpret classroom discussions, lectures, and activities for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing,
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and school staff to ensure effective communication and student engagement,
  • Adapt interpreting techniques according to individual student needs and educational goals,
  • Assist in facilitating communication during school functions, meetings, and extracurricular activities,
  • Foster a welcoming environment that promotes student participation and inclusion.

Details:

  • Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
  • Contract duration: August 2026 through June 2027
  • Serve in a supportive school community near Chesapeake, VA
