Job Description

A full-time position is available for a Sign Language Interpreter (1:1 SLI) to support a student who is deaf with additional visual impairment. This role is based in Elgin, IL, and requires close collaboration with the educational team to implement strategies that enhance visual access. The student is relatively new to American Sign Language (ASL), making language modeling an essential part of the position.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Valid sign language interpreter credentials/certifications
  • Experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing students, preferably those with additional visual impairments
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with educators and support staff to implement tailored communication strategies
  • Skills in language modeling to support ASL acquisition and development
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster a supportive learning environment

Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 sign language interpreting services throughout the full school day (5 days per week)
  • Collaborate with the educational team to ensure visual access strategies are successfully used
  • Model and support the students acquisition of ASL, adapting communication to their needs
  • Monitor and report on the students progress in language and communication skills
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions
