A skilled Sign Language Interpreter is needed to provide professional interpretation services in a school setting. This travel position is based in Columbia, MD, and requires effective communication support to foster an inclusive learning environment for students who use sign language.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa during classroom instruction, school events, and meetings.
- Facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students, teachers, staff, and parents.
- Adapt interpretation methods to suit varying educational content and situations.
- Collaborate with educators and support personnel to ensure accessibility and understanding.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with ethical standards in all interactions.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong interpreting skills.
- Previous experience interpreting in educational settings is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of educational terminology and curriculum to accurately convey messages.
- Ability to travel to different school locations within the region.
- Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Certification from a recognized interpreting organization is a plus.
