Job Description
Providing one-on-one support to a student with hearing and visual impairments, this role involves working closely with the educational team to ensure effective communication through American Sign Language (ASL) and promote the students access to the curriculum. The student is relatively new to ASL, so strong language modeling skills are essential.
Located in Chicago, IL, this full-time position is set within an elementary school and operates on a contract basis for the school year (CSY). The ideal candidate will be collaborative, patient, and skilled at tailoring interpretive strategies to meet the unique needs of the student.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver one-on-one sign language interpreting services to support a deaf student with additional visual impairment
- Collaborate with educators and specialists to implement strategies that maximize the students visual accessibility
- Provide consistent language modeling to aid the students acquisition and use of ASL
- Adapt interpretive methods based on the students evolving communication skills
- Maintain confidentiality and professional communication with the educational team and family
Qualifications:
- Certified Sign Language Interpreter credential required
- Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, particularly those with additional visual needs
- Strong understanding of ASL language development and language modeling techniques
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to individualized education plans
Position Details:
- Full time; 5 days per week
- Caseload of one student
