Job Description
Make a difference supporting students by providing essential communication access as a Sign Language Interpreter in an engaging educational environment. This contract position offers the opportunity to work full time (37.5 hours per week) alongside dedicated staff, facilitating inclusive learning for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students throughout the school year.
Skills & Experience Sought:
- Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of at least 3.5 and a passing score on the accompanying written test
- Consideration given to other credentials recognized as equivalent by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH)
- Experience interpreting in educational settings, especially K-12, is strongly valued
- Excellent expressive and receptive sign language skills
- Strong sense of professionalism, confidentiality, and adaptability
Role Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, and school activities to facilitate communication for students who use American Sign Language or other sign systems
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, support staff, and related service providers to meet each students individual needs
- Adjust interpreting style based on content, student age, and learning context
- Provide feedback and consultation regarding language development and access strategies when requested
- Maintain accurate records of assignments and student interaction, following school protocols and ethical standards
- Participate in ongoing training and school meetings as required
