Key Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Previous experience interpreting in educational settings
- Certification from a recognized interpreter organization (RID or equivalent, preferred)
- Knowledge of deaf culture and sensitivity to student needs
- Ability to adapt interpreting techniques to suit diverse classroom situations
- Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative spirit
Core Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into ASL (and vice versa) for students, staff, and parents during lessons, assemblies, meetings, and other school functions
- Support understanding and participation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Collaborate closely with teachers and educational teams to maximize student access and success
- Maintain confidentiality in all student and school matters
- Provide cultural mediation and advocacy when appropriate
- Participate in ongoing training or meetings as necessary to enhance service delivery
