Job Description

In this contract role, youll provide essential support for students with visual impairments within a cohesive campus community. This is your opportunity to deliver specialized services, teaching vital navigation skills to help students maximize their independence and confidence throughout the academic year.

Key Qualifications:

  • South Carolina certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) required
  • Proven experience working with children and youth, preferably in a school setting
  • Strong understanding of white cane skills, guiding techniques, and sensory development
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team and school staff
  • Compassionate, patient, and committed to inclusive education

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility skills, including white cane usage, trailing, and familiarization with environmental cues
  • Develop sensory awareness and strategies for spatial positioning using auditory and tactile information
  • Customize training based on individual needs to foster greater independence for each student
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, instructional strategies, and consultative services
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 25-35 students, with flexibility for fluctuation during the academic year

Role Details and Perks:

  • Onsite position working full-time, Monday through Thursday 7:30am3:30pm, Friday 7:30am1:30pm
  • Full administrative support and paid indirect time within contracted hours
