Step into a highly rewarding opportunity supporting students' independence and mobility skills in a specialized school environment. This contract position is set to begin August 10, 2026, and extends through May 21, 2027. As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, youll have the chance to positively impact preschool through high school students across three schools on one campus in the Union/Spartanburg area. With a manageable caseload ranging from 25-35 students, your expertise will shape the daily lives of visually impaired learners.
What Youll Bring:
- Current certification as a South Carolina Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS)
- Experience working with students ranging from PK through 12th grade is desired
- Strong understanding of mobility aids, including white canes, and the latest O&M instructional practices
- Excellent skills in developing individual plans, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining documentation
- Adaptability and a keen ability to tailor teaching strategies to meet diverse student needs
- Ability to start August 10th, 2026, and commit through the school year
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct instruction in orientation, mobility, and independent travel, including the use of white canes and environmental cues
- Foster sensory awareness, teaching students to rely on auditory, tactile, and spatial cues
- Develop and implement individualized educational goals for each student
- Collaborate closely with classroom teachers and related service providers for comprehensive support
- Maintain accurate and timely reports, and participate in team meetings, for which all worked hours are paid
- Participate in Zoom-based interviews to streamline the hiring process
