Step into a rewarding contract role supporting PK-12th grade students with visual impairments for the 2026-2027 academic year. As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you will provide specialized instruction and guidance on one campus serving three schools. Through your expertise, you'll empower 25-35 students (numbers may fluctuate throughout the year) to navigate their environment with confidence and independence.
Responsibilities:
- Teach white cane usage, trailing, and effective guiding techniques tailored to individual student needs.
- Foster sensory awareness, including auditory and tactile cues, to help students independently orient and travel within various settings.
- Utilize environmental and spatial landmarks to increase student autonomy and navigation skills.
- Collaborate with other educational professionals to create and implement individualized plans.
- Maintain accurate records and participate in paid team meetings and administrative hours as part of your contract.
- Engage in a consistent work week, Monday-Thursday from 7:30-3:30, and Fridays from 7:30-1:30.
Desired Qualifications:
- Current SC certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS).
- Experience with PK-12th grade students, especially those who are blind or visually impaired.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with students, staff, and families.
- Ability to tailor instructional approaches based on individual student needs.
- Commitment to promoting independence and safety in young learners.
This opportunity offers a full-time, 37.5-hour workweek on a beautiful campus and the flexibility of a school-based contract. Candidates will be interviewed via Zoom, with swift hiring decisions usually made within 24-48 hours.
