Discover an impactful opportunity as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a supportive educational setting near Portsmouth, VA. This contract role spans the 2026-2027 school year, with an assignment supporting multiple schools and a diverse K-12 student caseload. Key Qualifications:
- Current Virginia Orientation & Mobility Certification required
- Experience working with children and students across K-12 settings preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
- Flexibility to support multiple schools as needed
- Passion for fostering independence and accessibility for students with visual impairments
- Ability to adapt quickly and collaborate effectively with fellow educators
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments and develop individual orientation and mobility plans for students with visual impairments
- Provide direct instruction to students in cane skills, navigation, and independent travel within school and community environments
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to integrate orientation and mobility goals into educational programs
- Travel between assigned schools to serve students as needed
- Maintain thorough documentation and communicate student progress to all stakeholders
- Attend district meetings and participate in professional development when appropriate
Work Details & Benefits:
- Full-time schedule, 37.5 hours per week, during the academic year (late August through early June)
