Job Description

Step into a rewarding role as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist working on a part-time, contract basis with a diverse K-12 student caseload. We are seeking a skilled professional passionate about empowering students who are blind or visually impaired to achieve greater independence and confidence in their daily lives. This position focuses on providing direct services in a supportive school environment near Lakewood, NM.

Key Qualifications:

  • Certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) as a Mobility Trainer for the Blind
  • Experience providing orientation and mobility instruction to children or adolescents
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with students, families, and school teams
  • Ability to develop individualized instructional plans based on student needs
  • Commitment to professional ethics and inclusive practices

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver direct orientation and mobility services to K-12 students, fostering independence in navigation and safe travel
  • Assess students mobility needs and create customized lesson plans
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other service providers to support student goals and progress
  • Teach skills such as cane use, route planning, and adapting to diverse environments
  • Maintain comprehensive service records and participate in IEP meetings as needed
  • Provide guidance and training to school staff regarding strategies for supporting students with visual impairments
