Job Description

A contract opportunity is available for an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist to provide services across elementary, middle, and high schools near Kansas City, MO. This onsite role offers meaningful engagement with students who are blind or visually impaired, empowering them to gain independence and navigate their communities confidently.

The upcoming school year assignment runs from August 24th through May 28th, encompassing a full-time, MondayFriday schedule. However, those seeking alternative hours are encouraged to apply, as flexibility can be accommodated.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • National certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through ACVREP
  • Demonstrated experience providing orientation and mobility instruction for K12 students
  • Strong ability to adapt teaching strategies for students at various developmental levels
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with educational teams and families
  • Proficiency in foundational blindness skills such as cane travel, use of assistive technology, basic Braille, and daily living activities
  • Reliable means of traveling between school sites throughout the district

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough orientation and mobility evaluations for eligible students
  • Deliver direct instruction to help students develop independent travel, community navigation, and daily living skills
  • Teach the use of adaptive devices and techniques, customized to each students abilities and goals
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to support individualized education plans
  • Attend meetings and participate in ongoing professional development supported by the district
  • Maintain progress records and contribute to documentation as required
