A contract opportunity is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in Homestead, FL, starting for the upcoming 2025/2026 school year. This role offers 37.5 hours per week dedicated to supporting students with visual impairments in developing essential mobility and orientation skills.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing specialized instruction and training in mobility techniques and orientation strategies to students.
- Teaching the use of assistive technologies to enhance independence in navigating school, home, and community environments.
- Collaborating with educators, families, and other professionals to tailor mobility programs based on individual student needs.
- Monitoring student progress and adjusting strategies to maximize learning outcomes.
- Documenting and reporting on student performance according to educational standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited university or college; Masters degree preferred.
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential or eligibility with commitment to attain certification within the required timeframe.
- Previous experience working with visually impaired students is preferred.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a strong asset.
