Step into a rewarding contract opportunity as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist working with students in grades K-12. Based near Haverhill and serving the Andover area, youll play an essential role in helping learners of all ages develop crucial skills for independent navigation and confidence. This assignment runs from September 1, 2026, through June 14, 2027, with a consistent Monday through Friday schedule of 32.5 hours per week (8:15 am to 3:15 pm). As the dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist for one school, youll provide invaluable guidance and support to a diverse student population.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Experience working with K-12 students, especially in a school setting
- Knowledge of current practices and tools for individuals who are blind or visually impaired
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to engage with students, families, and school staff
- Ability to adapt instructional approaches to meet individual student needs
- Commitment to nurturing independence and safety in student travel skills
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments to determine students orientation and mobility needs
- Develop and implement individualized education programs in collaboration with educational teams
- Provide direct instruction to students in safe and effective navigation, route planning, and use of mobility aids
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to optimize student support
- Document progress and adjust instruction as needed
- Serve as an advocate and resource for students and their families
