Job Description

An educational opportunity is available for an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support visually impaired students in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for the 2025/26 school year. This contract role offers a 37.5-hour workweek focused on delivering specialized instruction and training to empower students in navigating their school, home, and community environments safely and independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized instruction in mobility techniques and orientation strategies tailored to students needs.
  • Train students in the use of assistive technologies to enhance independent travel and spatial awareness.
  • Collaborate with educators, families, and support staff to develop and implement effective mobility plans.
  • Assess student progress and adjust instruction methods accordingly.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and communication regarding student goals and achievements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree with an emphasis in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited institution; Masters degree preferred.
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility to obtain certification within the required timeframe.
  • Prior experience working with visually impaired students is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is an asset.
