Make a difference in the lives of students by providing specialized support as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. In this rewarding contract opportunity, you will deliver essential services to a small caseload in the Johnston, RI area. Sessions occur one day per week (7 hours total) and are hosted in a welcoming community space such as a local library, offering a unique setting for student learning and growth.
Key Qualifications:
- Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) certification and a valid O&M license
- Experience working in educational or community-based settings
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt instruction to diverse learners and environments
- Commitment to best practices in safety and student independence
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility plans for students with visual impairments
- Deliver one-on-one or small group instruction focused on safe travel and navigation skills
- Collaborate with families and school teams to support student progress and independence
- Maintain thorough documentation of student sessions, goals, and achievements
- Work creatively within community venues to provide real-world, practical instruction outside traditional classrooms
