Desired Experience and Qualifications:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Prior work with children or young adults in educational or community settings
- Strong understanding of assessment and instructional techniques specific to orientation and mobility
- Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs)
- Comfortable providing training and support to both students and staff
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Creative approach to adapting strategies for diverse student needs
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments to determine student strengths and needs related to orientation and mobility
- Develop and deliver tailored instruction to help students improve independent travel skills, both indoors and outdoors
- Monitor student progress and adjust programming as needed to meet established goals
- Consult with teachers, caregivers, and school teams to foster environments conducive to student success
- Participate in IEP meetings and documentation processes, contributing essential expertise on orientation and mobility
- Provide education on the use of mobility aids, including canes and auditory/tactile maps
- Maintain detailed records and ongoing communication about student progress
