A rewarding contract opportunity is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist eager to make a significant impact with students across PK-12th grades. This full-time role is based at a single campus housing three schools, supporting a caseload of approximately 25-35 studentsnumbers may fluctuate throughout the year. Your expertise will foster critical independence skills in students with visual impairments, helping them confidently navigate their environments.
Highlights:
- Full-time schedule, Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and Fridays from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM
- Exclusive, on-campus setting at a dedicated school for students with sensory disabilities
- Engage in both direct and paid indirect service hours, including team meetings and administrative time
- Immediate interviews available via Zoom, with prompt hiring decisions within 24-48 hours of interviews
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct instruction in the use of white canes and other mobility aids
- Teaching essential orientation skills, such as trailing and sighted guide techniques
- Helping students build auditory and tactile sensory awareness to understand their physical surroundings and develop spatial orientation
- Supporting students ability to utilize environmental cues and landmarks
- Maintaining regular communication with educational teams and families regarding student progress
Desired Qualifications:
- Current South Carolina Certification as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS)
- Demonstrated experience working with school-aged children, ideally within a school environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams
- Commitment to fostering independence and confidence in students with visual impairments
