Job Description

Step into a pivotal role supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing as an American Sign Language Interpreter in an Illinois school district for the 20262027 academic year. This contract, in-person opportunity is scheduled near Elgin, IL, with details on hours and specific start and end dates to be determined.

Serve as an essential bridge for communication by facilitating engagement in the classroom, during school events, and throughout day-to-day learning experiences. Your expertise in ASL will help foster an inclusive and accessible environment where every student can thrive academically and socially alongside their peers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and effective American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during classroom instruction, extracurricular activities, and meetings.
  • Facilitate clear and confidential communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers.
  • Support students' involvement in both academic and social aspects of school life.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with educators, special education teams, and related service providers to address individual student needs.
  • Uphold professional standards, maintain strict confidentiality, and follow ethical guidelines.
  • Offer interpretation support during IEP meetings and other essential school functions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records consistent with district policies.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Illinois licensure or approval required for school-based Sign Language Interpreters.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Previous experience in a school setting is highly advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities.
  • Skilled at working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
