Job Description

A school is seeking a skilled Deaf/Hard of Hearing Specialist to support students with hearing impairments in Hamtramck, MI. This contract position involves working closely with educators, families, and support staff to provide tailored interventions and accommodations that enhance educational outcomes for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and identify the specific needs of students with hearing impairments
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal guidelines
  • Provide direct instruction and support using appropriate communication methods such as sign language or assistive technology
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other professionals to adapt curriculum and classroom environments
  • Train staff and families on strategies to support students communication and learning
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly
  • Maintain accurate documentation and participate in meetings related to student services

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant degree or certification in Deaf Education or related field
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a school setting
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other communication methods used by the deaf/hard of hearing community
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies and educational accommodations for hearing-impaired students
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Understanding of applicable laws and educational standards governing services for deaf/hard of hearing students
