A school district in Birmingham, AL is seeking a skilled Deaf/Hard of Hearing Specialist to support students with hearing impairments. This contract position offers an opportunity to work directly with students in a school setting, helping to create an inclusive learning environment tailored to their unique communication and educational needs.
Responsibilities:
- Assess and evaluate students who are deaf or hard of hearing to determine their educational requirements
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) specific to hearing-impaired students
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to facilitate appropriate accommodations and modifications
- Provide specialized instruction using various communication methods, such as sign language, lip reading, and assistive technology
- Monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly
- Conduct training sessions for school personnel on best practices for supporting deaf/hard of hearing students
- Advocate for students to ensure equal access to the curriculum and school activities
Qualifications:
- Certification or licensure as a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing or equivalent qualifications
- Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting
- Knowledge of auditory and visual communication techniques and assistive listening devices
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to develop and implement effective individualized educational plans
- Familiarity with IDEA regulations and special education law related to hearing impairments is preferred
