Provide specialized nursing care in a stepdown cardiac neuro unit during night shifts at a well-established teaching hospital campus. This travel nursing role offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in a structured environment that values strong clinical skills and critical thinking.
Location:
This assignment is based in Newburgh, Indiana, offering proximity to two hospital campuses within 8 to 11 miles. The primary site is a 19-bed unit blending stepdown and medical-surgical patients. Newburgh is a community with easy access to nearby urban centers, providing a balanced lifestyle with both small-town charm and city amenities within reach.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver comprehensive care for post-procedure cardiac patients (including cath/stents, pacers, ICDs, and ablations) and neurological cases (such as CVAs, seizures, and TBIs)
- Interpret telemetry and 12-lead EKGs accurately; travelers must pass tele tests
- Initiate and titrate drips including Cardizem, Amio, Cardene, Nitro, Insulin, and Heparin
- Perform strong neuro assessments using NIHSS and deliver sepsis care
- Manage chest tubes and insert peripheral IVs
- Provide critical care with sound assessment and clinical decision-making skills
- Float between campuses and units within skillset as required, with advance notice
- Participate in occasional weekend and holiday rotations, averaging three weekends in six weeks
- Maintain professional appearance in navy blue scrubs without competing logos
- Precept new hires and students as part of a teaching hospital
Qualifications & Experience:
- Current active compact RN license
- Certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years solid stepdown experience plus at least 1 travel contract, or 5 years solid stepdown experience without travel
- Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
- Proven ability to pass telemetry interpretation tests
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills essential
Schedule & Contract Details:
- 12-hour night shifts, 6:30 PM to 7:00 AM
- Contract length: 13 weeks with start dates on 4/20 or 5/4
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week, except limited hours during holidays when unit is closed
- Floating required within campuses and occasionally cross-campus with prior notice
- Strict 40-mile radius rule; no local candidates
