Job Description

A contract nursing position is available in a well-established medical surgical unit located in Waukesha, WI, affiliated with a Level IV Trauma Center and Level III NICU. This role offers the opportunity to provide care for a diverse surgical population, including bariatric, orthopedic, cardiac, and respiratory patients, in a teaching hospital environment equipped with advanced stroke services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and manage post-operative patients with complex needs, including bariatric, bladder, and orthopedic surgeries.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and administer treatments such as cardiac drips, heparin, and insulin infusions.
  • Provide expert wound care and manage chest tubes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including OT, PT, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, and hospitalists.
  • Utilize EPIC for accurate electronic charting and patient documentation.
  • Maintain patient ratios of approximately 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-7 at night to ensure quality care.
  • Participate in weekend rotations every other weekend with no on-call responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Active RN license with a minimum of 1 year clinical nursing experience, ideally in a med-surg or post-op setting.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • Proficiency with MSU skillsets, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and managing complex post-operative patients.
  • Experience with critical care drips and wound management.

Scheduling & Work Environment:

  • Contract assignment with the potential for weekend rotation every other week.
  • Free employee parking available.
  • Professional attire required; any scrub color allowed except denim or camouflage.
  • Orientation includes a one-day unit-specific training.
  • Time off approvals up to two weeks; holiday coverage requires one summer and one winter holiday.
  • No on-call duties.
